What can Europcar customers do to reduce or remove their car rental excess liability?

There are 2 options available to lower or remove your damage liability fee (DLF) when renting a car from Europcar Australia.

Europcar Liability Buy Down Products:

Purchase an excess reduction product from Europcar at the car rental desk.

Hiccup Insurance:

Purchase Rental Vehicle Excess (RVE) insurance cover from Hiccup Insurance, a product underwritten by global, trusted insurance company, Allianz Australia Insurance Limited.

Option 1: Europcar Australia Excess Reduction Products

First of all, let’s take a look at the products being sold by Europcar Australia.

Europcar currently sells 3 products for travel within Australia: Collision Damage Waiver, Super Collision Damage Waiver and GoZen. A summary of each product’s features and daily cost is as follows:

1. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is Europcar’s basic protection product. It is available for Europcar Customers aged 21 years or older for travel within Australia.

Cost: From $24.20 per day + local depot surcharges.

Damage Liability Fee (DLF): The Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) reduces the damage liability fee payable by the Customer if damage occurs to the vehicle during the rental period to either $990 or $1,100 + local depot surcharges (actual liability depends on the car type rented with smaller cars generally being cheaper than prestige or 4WD car categories).

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) Key Product Features:

Provides cover for reversing damage to non-commercial vehicles;

  • No cover for underbody damage to the vehicle;
  • No cover for overhead damage to the vehicle;
  • No cover for windscreen, headlight, wheel and tyre damage;
  • No cover for accidents on unsealed roads;
  • No cover for luggage and personal effects of driver or passengers;
  • No cover for immersion in water;
  • No cover for use off road; and
  • Available for all car categories.

2. Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW)

Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) is Europcar’s mid-level product that is available for drivers 21 years or older who are renting a car with Europcar within Australia.

Cost: The Super Collision Damage Waiver Product starts at $30.25 per day + local depot surcharges.

Damage Liability Fee (DLF): Reduces the damage liability fee to either $440 or $550 + local depot surcharges (actual liability depends on the car type rented with smaller cars generally being cheaper than prestige or 4WD car categories).

Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) Key Product Features:

Provides cover for reversing damage to non-commercial vehicles;

  • No cover for underbody damage to the vehicle;
  • No cover for overhead damage to the vehicle;
  • No cover for windscreen, headlight, wheel and tyre damage;
  • No cover for accidents on unsealed roads;
  • No cover for luggage and personal effects of driver or passengers;
  • No cover for immersion in water;
  • No cover for use off road; and
  • Available for all car categories.

3. GoZen

GoZen is Europcar’s premium excess reduction product for drivers 21 years or older who are travel within Australia.

Cost: The GoZen product starts at $39.60 per day + local depot surcharges.

Damage Liability Fee (DLF): Reduces damage liability fee to $0. Out of pocket expenses may still apply if damage occurs as a result of a product exclusion.

Product features include:

  • No cover for underbody damage to the vehicle;
  • No cover for overhead damage to the vehicle;
  • No cover for immersion in water;
  • No cover for use off road;
  • No cover for accidents on unsealed roads;
  • No cover for luggage and personal effects of driver or passengers;
  • Not available for Intermediate Elite, Premium, Luxury, Premium – Minivan, Intermediate – Minivan or Full Size – 4WD car categories;
  • Provides cover for reversing damage; and
  • Provides cover for windscreen, headlight, wheel and tyre damage.

Local depot surcharges are added to the daily costs of Europcar’s protection products. How much will the products actually cost?

An example showing the Europcar excess reduction product costs for Brisbane City car rentals (inclusive of premium location surcharges) is broken down by car type below.

To summarise, the following table shows the Customer’s remaining rental vehicle excess liability if they purchase one of the Europcar products, the base cost per day for the products (excluding premium location surcharges) and also the actual cost of purchasing the product for a rental car in Brisbane City (inclusive of the relevant premium location surcharges). The cost of the products varies based on the car rental location, the location’s premium location surcharge associated costs and the car type being hired.

DLF-Products-Worked-Example

The premium location surcharge fees can add an additional 3% to 26% to the damage liability fee, depending on the pickup location of the vehicle. For example, Brisbane City’s current Premium Location Surcharge is an additional 6% of all rental agreement charges.

Option 2: Purchase Rental Vehicle Excess (RVE) insurance from Hiccup Insurance

Hiccup Insurance have partnered with Allianz Global Assistance to provide a Rental Vehicle Excess (RVE) insurance product for travel within Australia.

Product Features include:

* A choice of either $4,000 cover or $6,000 cover;

* $0 excess options available (no out of pocket expense);

* Provides cover for accidents, damage or stolen vehicles (including single vehicle accidents);

* Provides cover for damage to windscreens, tyres, glass, undercarriage & overhead damage;

* Provides cover for all authorised drivers on the rental agreement who meet the age requirement;

* Provides cover for all travellers within Australia from any residency; and

* Provides cover for luggage and personal effects up to $1,500 (max $500 per person).
